Can ChatGPT summarize a YouTube video?

By the Luminar team ยท Updated

Short answer: often not from the link alone. ChatGPT usually can't open the video itself, so it may guess from the title. It works well if you paste the video's transcript. A YouTube summarizer like Luminar does that step for you and shows the minute each point came from.

Why pasting a link often fails

A YouTube link points to a video player, not to text. Unless the chat tool can fetch the transcript, it has nothing real to read. When that happens, the answer may sound right but be built from the title and description.

The method that works: paste the transcript

  1. Open the video on YouTube in a browser.
  2. Click more under the title, then Show transcript.
  3. Copy the text and paste it into ChatGPT with a request like: summarize this in 5 points with timestamps.

This works on any plan, but it takes a few minutes, and long videos can be too long to paste in one go.

The faster way

A YouTube summarizer reads the transcript for you. With Luminar you press Summarise under the video and get a short summary in seconds. Each point links to the moment it was said, so you can check anything that sounds off, and you can ask follow up questions.

Questions people ask

Is it free?

Pasting a transcript into ChatGPT works on the free plan. Luminar also has a free plan with 5 summaries a month.

What if the video has no transcript?

Then there is nothing to paste. Luminar can listen to the audio of videos without subtitles on paid plans, and 2 a month on the free plan.
