How to get the transcript of a YouTube video

By the Luminar team ยท Updated

Short answer: on a computer, open the video, click more under the title, then click Show transcript. The transcript opens next to the video with times for every line.

1. Open the transcript on YouTube

  1. Open the video on YouTube in a web browser.
  2. Click more in the description under the video.
  3. Scroll down and click Show transcript.

The transcript appears on the right. Click any line to jump to that moment.

2. If there is no transcript

Some videos have no captions, for example music or videos with very little speech. Then there is nothing to show. A tool that listens to the audio itself can still turn the speech into text.

3. Turn the transcript into notes

A full transcript of a long video is still a lot to read. Skim it for the main ideas, or let an AI turn it into a short summary.

4. Summarize instead of reading it all

Paste the video link into Luminar and it reads the transcript for you. You get the main points with links to the exact moment each was said, and you can ask questions about anything in the video.
