How to take notes from YouTube lectures

By the Luminar team ยท Updated

Short answer: get an outline before you watch, take notes in your own words while you watch, and review with a summary after. Watching with an outline in front of you is the biggest time saver.

1. Get the outline first

Before you press play, look at the chapters, the slides if they are shared, or an AI summary of the lecture. Knowing where the lecture is going makes every minute easier to follow.

2. Write ideas, not sentences

Do not try to copy what the speaker says. Write the idea in a few words of your own. If you cannot, that part needs a second look.

3. Speed up the easy parts

Play the parts you already know at 1.5x or 2x, and slow down for the hard ones. Your outline tells you which is which.

4. Mark the moments to come back to

When something is hard, write the minute next to your note. Later you can jump straight there instead of searching the whole video.

5. Review with a summary

After the lecture, compare your notes to a summary. Luminar gives you the main points with links to the exact moment each one was said, and you can ask it to explain any part more simply. Gaps in your notes show up fast.
